Bite guards help prevent tooth damage due to the habit of grinding or clenching your teeth.
Teeth grinding – called Bruxism – is common and aflicts both children and adults. Many people don’t know they have it because they grind their teeth while they sleep. What they experience instead is the after affects: waking up with a dull headache or sore jaw.
Grinding wears away or fractures tooth enamel. Eventually, it may even loosen your teeth. Grinding can also damage delicate jaw joints. The causes of Bruxism aren’t really known but several factors may be involved:
- Problems sleeping
- Abnormal bite (teeth do not fit well together when closed)
- Crooked or missing teeth
Bite guards are custom made by your dentist to exactly fit your teeth. They are made from a soft material that is comfortable and does not interfere with swallowing or sleep. Bite guards provide cushioning and relieve some of the pressure caused by grinding or clenching your teeth. You wake up more relaxed and your teeth and jaw joints are protected from further damage.
Bite guards do not alleviate an abnormal bite. Your dentist can tell you if an abnormal bite is the cause of your teeth grinding. If so, there are several options to resolving this problem, including reshaping or restructuring the biting surfaces of the offending teeth with inlays or crowns.
If you experience
- Dull headache
- Sore jaw
- Aching teeth
when you wake up, it could be from teeth grinding (Bruxism).
